Goldman and Nikki have a great time on a brief R&R that they spend together on China Beach. Their reunion is marred by the fact that Nikki refuses to marry him, fearing he will be killed in combat. Goldman returns to Firebase Ladybird to find that his unit has been assigned to help take Hill 1000. They've taken it before and lost it before. And this battle promises to be the worst. Even after the bunker is finally taken, it is found empty. They go back down so that a plane can spray a defoliate. They must go back and take that hill yet again. Horn has, in the meantime, gotten in trouble with a young -- and new -- officer. Sitting at the bottom of the hill and awaiting the court-martial, he sees a wounded Taylor and he decides to go back with his buddies and fight. Horn is seriously wounded and sent home.
A 13-year-old French boy wants to join the squad. After he is told he can't, he follows the squad. After Hanley is wounded, Caje tells him that he is now part of the group and his orders are to see that the Lt. gets back to town. When they get back to town, they find out that the Germans are setting up a trap for the Americans. Hanley sends the boy to find Saunders' squad and tell them about the Germans so they can radio the information to HQ.
The squad gets a replacement, Mosley Lovelace (a Georgia boy), who says that the best thing he got from the Yankee army is his boots and rifle.
Gallagher and Komansky bail out over a recently liberated Italian island with a small airfield manned by just two African American soldiers and a handful of German POWs. Komansky is suspicious of Major Luke, the commander of the base, with good reason. Luke turns out to be an AWOL private who doesn't mind serving as long as he doesn't have to shoot anybody.
Captain Dula has earned a reputation as a jinx pilot, and Gallagher restricts him to non-pilot duties. But when Gallagher and Stovall are wounded, Dula takes over the piloting and gives Komansky an order, which he ignores. Dula demands that an entry be made to the log noting Komansky's "mutiny." On their next mission, however, Komansky is seriously hurt, and his very survival may be in Dula's hands.
