Looks like we have to keep waiting for a 'Xena' reboot

Though Xena: Warrior Princess certainly had a good run in the '90s, fans of the cult series were excited to hear that NBC was in the talks of rebooting it with a new cast — and more evolved CGI. However, it was announced today that the reboot was put back on the shelf for the time being.

"Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn't warrant the reboot," NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke told The Hollywood Reporter"I'd never say never on that one because it's such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead."

This comes after writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who was heading the project, dropped out due to creative differences. The Hollywood Reporter also stated that the original series' executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi would also act as consultants. Some are speculating these "creative differences" stemmed from Grillo-Marxuach's desire to write Xena and Gabrielle as a couple instead of "just friends."

The theory that Xena, originally played by Lucy Lawless, and Gabrielle, played by Renee O'Connor, are more than friends has always been big in Xena fandom, practically brought to fruition as Xena and Gabrielle kiss in the final episode of the series. However, it was never confirmed nor denied by show creators — though io9 did report before that this is the reason that, despite Xena and Gabrielle starring in the show, the two characters are only in one frame together during the credits, and they have their backs toward each other!
