Throughout your life, you likely go through a number of friends. While it would be great to stay in touch with everyone you’ve ever been close with, everyone has their own lives and it’s not always possible. This is why it must have been so exciting for actors Mary Chieffo and Mary Wiseman to find out they had each been cast on Star Trek: Discovery. They were friends and classmates at Julliard School’s Drama Division!
Chieffo has had small roles in independent and short films, as well well as TV shows for the last decade, most notably on The Mindy Project. Wiseman has been active in Hollywood for about five years, and had a pretty large role on the Netflix series Longmire.
On Discovery, however, these ladies aren’t BFFs. Chieffo plays L’Rell, a Klingon, while Wiseman plays Starfleet Cadet Sylvia Tilly. Neither of them considered themselves to be Trekkies before joining the cast, but have quickly learned how to integrate themselves into the world. Chieffo is a self-admitted geek, so she told E! News she knew how important it was to do the fandom justice.
“I definitely felt pressure to be well versed. My approach was just to do my best and watch the shows that are recommended and points of interest for me and try to be acclimated that way," Wiseman told E! News, "But yeah, there's this huge world. It means so much to people, so you really want to feel like you've done your due diligence to understand and honor the material."
