The Comics Code Authority changed everything in 1954. Prior to the self-regulation, the comic book industry pumped out lurid crime and horror comics. After the Comics Code, comics cleaned up.
Instead of mobsters and ghouls, superheroes and television characters filled the four-color pages. The imprints Dell and Gold Key mined most of TV for ideas.
