Six facts about 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' episode 'The Battle'

The Next Generation episode "The Battle" first aired on this day in 1987. It is the eighth episode of the first season of the iconic sci-fi series. This episode contained a few firsts, a few laughs, and a few behind-the-scenes surprises. For starters, it takes places in the year 2364!  Let's dig into this memorable mission.

The "Picard Maneuver" was born.

The "Picard Maneuver" battle tactic originated in this episode. Off screen, this took on a new meaning, signifying Patrick Stewart pulling and adjusting his uniform shirt.

A first peek into the captain's quarters.

Ever wanted to see inside a captain's quarters? Well now you can! This episode was the first time Picard's quarters were shown on screen. Complete with bookshalves, starbase paintings and the sextant.

Wesley earned his stripes.

This is the first time Wesley Crusher wears his iconic rainbow striped shirt. This shirt would become a staple in every scene he appears in for the duration of the first season.

We almost boarded a Ferengi ship.

The original script, written by Larry Forrester, called for a few scenes onboard the Ferengi ship. The idea was that these scenes would provide some insight and backstory to the Ferengi culture and history. Unfortuntaely, they were left on the cutting room floor and never made it to filming.

The producer thought the episode was… "pretty good."

Hey, that's almost a compliment! Producer Maurice Hurley thought the episode was "pretty good," mainly because of Patrick Stewart's performance. Originally, Hurley was not a big fan of the episode. He did not believe that the Ferengi were a good adversary.

Data referenced a Christmas classic.

In one of the bloopers from this episode, Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data) strolled through the USS Stargazer bridge. When he saw the dedication plaque, in his best Jimy Stewart impression, he exclaimed, "For God's sakes, Mary, they built this thing in Bedford Falls!" It's a Wonderful Android Life, after all.
